'Huaning' leaves PAR; 'habagat' to bring rain showers, thunderstorms over northern Luzon -- PAGASA

Tropical storm "Huaning" (international name "Lupit") has already left the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) at around 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7, but may continue to pull the southwest monsoon or "habagat" onto the country.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said storm Lupit was at 585 kilometers (km) north-northeast of Itbayat, Batanes as of 4 p.m.

PAGASA also continues to monitor tropical storm "Mirinae" (formerly "Gorio") at 2,015 km northeast of extreme northern Luzon or outside the PAR.

Both weather disturbances are expected to keep enhancing the southwest monsoon that could bring scattered light to moderate to at times heavy rains and thunderstorms over Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Benguet, Abra, Batanes, and Babuyan Islands in the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

PAGASA warned against possible flash floods or rain-induced landslides during heavy or prolonged rainfall, especially in areas that are highly susceptible to these hazards.

Moreover, weather specialist Ariel Rojas said PAGASA is monitoring a low pressure area (LPA) off Mindanao, which may develop into a tropical depression in the next few days.

The LPA was at 1,485 km east of Mindanao as of 4 p.m.

Rojas said the weather disturbance may enter the PAR on Sunday, Aug. 8, as an LPA.

"It may develop into a tropical depression inside the PAR and will be assigned the local name 'Isang," he said.

While the potential cyclone has a slim chance of making landfall, PAGASA still advised the public to continue monitoring official updates as the forecast scenario may still change.
