Reynaldo Galido, who represented the Philippines in boxing during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, sports a multi-color-designed athletic shoes which he says was purchased at the Olympic Village in Tokyo for roughly about P11,000.
A member of ABAP’s women’s boxing team coaching staff here at the XXXII Olympiad, Galido says he forked out the amount not only for the shoes’ bright colors but for the tag.
“Eto pinaglalabanan dito!” he says during breakfast Friday at Conrad Tokyo, proudly pointing to the label which says ‘Tokyo 2020.”
A factor in preparing featherweight silver medal winner Nesthy Petecio for the Games, Galido says he had tried to convince fellow coach Elmer Pamisa, who trained guaranteed silver medalist Carlo Paalam from an early age in Cagayan de Oro City, to buy a similar pair.
“Ayaw e,” says Galido, laughing. “Sayang daw yung ten thousand niya kasi tatapak-tapakan lang. “At saka nagpapagawa ata siya ng bahay. Kaya ako na lang.”
