DOST study on relations between body composition, quality of life in old age to start soon

The Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) is expected to commence its research on the relations between body composition and quality of life in old age.

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said preparations are underway for the implementation of the DOST-FNRI's research on nutrition and ageing.

“The project aims to determine the association of body composition with the functional capacity and quality of life of older persons in selected regions in the country,” he said during his weekly report on Friday, Aug. 6.

“Specifically, it will assess the body composition, functional capacity and quality of life of older persons; and determine the following: relationship of muscle mass and fat mass with functional capacity and quality of life; relationship of geographic and environmental variables with the nutritional status of senior citizens using geographic information system or GIS; and the energy cost of selected physical and occupational activities of older persons.”

Meanwhile, the DOST chief also bared that launching of “Safe Food Digest”, an e-magazine on food safety.

He said the DOST-FNRI and DOST-Region III launched the magazine “that aims to communicate best practices, practical tips and guides” on food safety.

The DOST-FNRI released the results of its study showing that there is high prevalence of undernutrition among Filipino elderly in food insecure households.

The study showed that about 83 percent of the Filipino seniors were not meeting the recommended energy intake, and about 71 percent were not meeting the recommended protein intake.
