Laguna's three biggest provincial hospitals reach full capacity amid COVID-19 surge

LAGUNA - The three biggest government hospitals in the province are already full amid surging cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Governor Ramil L. Hernandez said on Thursday (August 5).

"Puno na po ang aming provincial hospitals, lalo na po itong malalaking hospitals namin, yung San Pablo, Calamba, and Sta. Cruz. Yun po yung tatlong malaking provincial hospital sa Laguna, puno na po 'yun (Our provincial hospitals are already full, including the three biggest hospitals in San Pablo, Calamba, and Sta. Cruz)," Hernandez said in an interview with DZMM Teleradyo,

According to the governor, the COVID-19 situation in Laguna has reached a critical level with 2,976 active cases as of August 4.

"Pwede po nating masabing kritikal na kasi dati, bumaba na, pero nung nakaraang linggo, nag-umpisa na naman pong tumaas at may reported na po kaming 17 na Delta variant cases (We can say that it's already critical because the cases have declined over the past weeks but just last week, it started to increase again and we have 17 reported Delta variant cases)," Hernandez said.

Hernandez said most of the Delta variant cases have already tested negative for the virus and their close contacts have undergone PCR tests.

Laguna is currently under the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) but Hernandez said he is open to the implementation of the stricter enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in the province should the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) decide it.

The governor, however, admitted that the provincial government does not have enough funds to provide ECQ cash assistance.

"Kapag mga relief goods lang po ang pag-uusapan po natin, kaya pa po ng pondo ng probinsya. Pero kapag po cash assistance na, ang pinag-uusapan na natin diyan ay bilyon, hindi po kaya ng provincial government. (If we're talking about relief goods, the provincial funds can cover that. But for cash assistance, we're talking about a billion pesos, the provincial government can't afford that)," Hernandez said.
