Here's how to get better screen time viewing for the family

Plus, there's a new animated film out this August 6

The start of the pandemic had us all stressed out at home with work-from-home and parenting duties all getting jumbled up that we lose track of what day it is already. One thing that helped gives us a semblance of normalcy are the online shows we get to watch with the family.

Since movie theaters are out of the question, watching shows online has been a great help in keeping the peace at home. For one, family movie night became part of our routine, but it can be time-consuming when it comes to choosing which ones to watch. Aside from the top 10 row feature by Netflix, they now have Kids Top 10 row that's perfect for family movie night.

It features the most popular children's content based on the country you are based in. So, in our case, what's trending in the Philippines. But there's more, parents are given a variety of safe tools to curate how our children can view the vast library of this online streaming platform—from custom ratings, profile locks, even blocking key words and titles, with maturity rating settings. All of these will help alleviate our worries as a parent, because we can't be with them the whole day as they watched their shows online.

Other than family movie night, while the parents are busy working, children spend quite a lot of time watching shows on their own. How do parents keep track of what they're watching and what they like? Netflix has added a bi-weekly kids recap, specifically of what their children have been watching and are interested in, sent via e-mail. This gives parents another way to engage with their children, making up for "lost" time and creating new ways to communicate with each other. Another wonderful feature from this e-mail notification is that they provide coloring printouts based on the children's favorite or most recent views. It's a nice supplemental activity that the whole family can get into.

"What changes is how parents are involved in the process of discovery. It's really important that we help our kids discover content that's good for them especially when they're younger and when they need us to use the remote. And then they get older and then they want to have that remote and you can almost never get it back from them," Netflix's director of product innovations Jennifer Nieva says candidly to a select group of media outlets.

Nieva, who is also a mom, also shared her personal favorites which parents can also try, "For me, and this is my personal answer in our family, it's been wonderful to have distinct experiences for my kids. it's almost like having their own room within Netflix. This is mine, this is hers, and this is his. I have two kids. I would love for parents to take advantage of that and set up individual profiles for kids if that's what's right for their families. It certainly has been wonderful for ours. and it was wonderful for you to echo that top 10 for kids, we experience the same situation and we're hopeful that features like this really bring more joy to our Filipino members and if that means making it easier to pick that movie night title, that's great."

And speaking of movie night, here's a suggestion—Vivo will be out tomorrow. In collaboration with Sony Pictures, this animated movie film stars a music-loving kinkajou is out on a mission to deliver a love song for an old friend. Featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ynairaly Simo, and Zoe Saldana. This is a show that's not to be missed! Bring out the popcorn and have a happy Friday night with the family.
