GMA, Cavite mayor resigns due to health reasons; daughter vice mayor takes over

GENERAL MARIANO ALVAREZ, Cavite - Mayor Walter D. Echevarria, Jr. officially resigned from his post as mayor of this town on Tuesday (August 3) due to health reasons.

"Buhat ng pagbabago sa aking kalusugan, ako po ay lubos na nagpapakumbabang iwan ang aking pwesto upang kayo po ay mapaglingkuran ng mas tapat at nararapat (Due to my health concerns, I humbly leave my post so that you can be served by someone who can do it more efficiently)," Echevarria wrote in a statement posted on Facebook.

Echevarria filed a leave of absence in October, 2020, upon his doctors' recommendation, with his daughter and the town's Vice Mayor Maricel E. Torres assuming the responsibilities of acting mayor.

A few hours after Echevarria's announcement of his official resignation, Torres took her oath as the municipal mayor in the presence of Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla.

Number one Sangguniang Bayan member Angela Lenin Paycana also took her oath as vice mayor during the ceremony.
