BI deports Korean fugitive wanted for $43-M online gambling racket

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has deported a South Korean fugitive wanted in his own country for operating an illegal online gambling site on the Internet.

BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said that 44-year-old Park Junyoung has been flown to Incheon, South Korea from Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA).

Morente said Park was expelled pursuant to a summary deportation order that the BI Board of Commissioners issued against him two years ago for being an undesirable alien and violating the conditions of his stay in the Philippines.

“He is now in the custody of authorities in South Korea to stand trial for his alleged crimes. We have also placed him on our black list to prevent him from re-entering the Philippines,” the BI chief added.

Park’s deportation came following his surrender in Cebu City. He reportedly managed to hide for several years in the Philippines.

A warrant for his arrest was issued by the Busan district court in South Korea where is charged with violating his country’s law against illegal gambling.

Information from the Interpol revealed that between 2016 and 2019, Park and his accomplices set up online gambling sites that enabled customers to bet on the results of local and international sports competitions.

Users of the sites were instructed to deposit their money in a designated bank account before they could gamble by predicting the outcome of sports contests.

Park's team charged e-money to bettors, which enabled the former to earn huge profits as the said gaming sites attracted large numbers of customers in South Korea.

Investigators pegged the amount of profits Park and his cohorts gained from their illegal operations at more than 50.3 billion won or roughly $43 million.
