Artist creates mini figurines out of used face shields inspired by Pinoy Olympic athletes

A better way to use face shields?

We all have those nights when we just can't get a good sleep. Either we aren't just sleepy enough or our mind is just somewhere else. The best way to shake it off is to have a warm glass of milk or to just tire yourself out. For Je Armie Mondragon, an artist from Palawan, his late nights have become a creative journey that resulted in artworks that honor Filipino Olympic athletes.

On July 31, 2021, 2 a.m., Mondragon crafted artworks inspired by Hidilyn Diaz and Margielyn Didal's wins at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. To make it, he used bottle caps and used face shields, which took him two hours to finish.

In his interview with Energy FM 107.7 Kalibo, Mondragon expressed that he wants his figurines to spark optimism and strength for people challenged by the pandemic.

"Tulad nitong mga atleta na tuloy ang pakikipag laban matupad ang pangarap walang susuko hanggat kaya (Just like these athletes that continues to fight for their dreams, we should not give up as long as we can)," he says. "At bilang kabataan ay gusto ko po ito magsilbing insparasyon sa mga nakakarami tuloy lang lalo na doon po sa mga naliligaw ng landas (As a youth, I want this to serve as inspiration to many especially to those who are lost)."
