3 passengers, boat captain rescued in Surigao City

Personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Station Surigao del Norte rendered assistance to at least two passengers and a boat captain from a half-submerged motorbanca off Surigao City on Monday, Aug. 2.

The motorbanca MBCA Fhrenz-2 departed from Dinagat Island bound for Surigao City. While traveling off Barangay Baybay, Surigao City, the motorbanca was battered by huge waves that caused it to submerge.

Upon receiving the information, PCG Station Surigao del Norte Commander Elaine Pangilinan deployed a search and rescue team to render immediate assistance.

As the rescue team sighted the distressed motorbanca, a passing motorbanca MBCA Carrascal Transporter bound for Surigao City already rendered assistance to the two passengers.

The boat captain, however, remained on the submerged boat while waiting for the Coast Guard’s assistance.

The PCG rescue team escorted the passing motorbanca while towing the distressed boat until it arrived at Surigao Baseport.

Meanwhile, the boat captain identified as Rico Castillon was brought to the Coast Guard Station Surigao del Norte for further inquiries and medical assistance.

The PCG said no passengers and crew members were injured during the incident.

Pangilinan reminded fishermen and mariners not to venture at sea during inclement weather and sea condition to avoid maritime incidents.
