CHED rejects calls to postpone 2021 medical board exams

While there are those who are calling for the postponement of the Physicians Licensure Exam (PLE) set next month, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) maintained that there are also those who are looking forward for the exams to push through.

“Iyan ay desisyon kasi iyan ng Licensure units, pero doon sa konsultasyon kasi natin, bagama’t mayroong mga gustong magpa-postpone, marami ding gustong ituloy, kasi madaming gustong makapagtapos eh (That is the decision of the Licensure units, but in our consultation, although there are those who want to postpone, there are also many who want to continue, because there are many who want to graduate),” CHED Chairman Popoy De Vera said during the Laging Handa public briefing on Tuesday, Aug. 31.

The Philippine Medical Students’ Association (PMSA) and the National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP), in a joint statement issued Aug. 30, urged the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) anew to postpone the scheduled September 2021 PLE.

This, the groups said, is due to the number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) active cases in the country which continues to grow “exponentially.” However, De Vera underscored the need to consider the view of other stakeholders. “You have to balance all the sentiments of the different sectors,” he added.

The more important consideration, De Vera said, is to ensure the safety of the test takers.

“Kailangang ipagpatuloy ito, kasi mayroong mga estudyante na gustong makatapos, gustong maghanapbuhay at saka kailangan natin ng additional health workers dahil sa COVID (This needs to continue, because there are students who want to graduate, want to work and then we need additional health workers because of COVID),” De Vera said.

“We have to focus, continue to producing more doctors,” he added.
