PAGASA: 'Habagat' to bring light to heavy rains over parts of Luzon

The southwest monsoon or "habagat" may bring moderate to heavy rains over Batanes and Babuyan group of islands in the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its 11 p.m. advisory on Tuesday, Aug. 3.

PAGASA said light to moderate with at times heavy rains may also continue to affect Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Apayao, Abra, and Benguet.

PAGASA warned against possible flash floods or rain-induced landslides during heavy or prolonged rainfall, especially in areas that are highly susceptible to these hazards.

A low pressure area (LPA) northeast of Batanes continues to enhance the southwest monsoon that triggers habagat rains over some parts of Luzon.

As of 3 p.m. the LPA was estimated at 580 kilometers northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, and may become a tropical depression within the next few hours, PAGASA said.

Once it becomes a tropical depression inside the Philippine area of responsibility, PAGASA will be giving it a local name "Gorio."

Meanwhile, PAGASA said that partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms may prevail over the rest of the country.
