Retail meets avant-garde in H&M's latest designer collaboration. For the season, the Swedish fashion label works with Toga as they put high fashion twists on wardrobe classics, serving pieces that are true to their combined style and signature design aesthetic.

To be launched on Sept. 2, 2021, the Toga Archive x H&M collection presents modern wearable art, from "hybridized trench coats, deconstructed shirts, plissé skirts, exacting tailoring, and exuberant accessories." For its women's wear line, expect to see artful glamor with the collection's play on texture, from sheer tops and wool oversized coats to bugle beaded-blazer and Toga's trademark cut-out and embellishments.
"We are huge fans of versatile design at H&M, which is why Yasuko Furuta’s ingenious pieces for Toga are so appealing," Ann-Sofie Johansson, creative advisor at H&M. "Her signature cut-outs, for example, can be set against bare skin or paired with a sequined underlayer to glamorous effect. We are thrilled to be able to bring her playful but intellectual style to our customers and look forward to the stylish outfit combinations they will create."

Toga was founded by Yasuko Furuta in 1997, after studying fashion design and patterning at Esmod in Japan and Paris. Its brand name pays homage to a sacred piece of cloth. Since its launch in the '90s, the independent Japanese fashion house has been challenging gender norms in clothing. With its great grasp on its design identity and a vision for modernity, Toga was able to put on runway shows in London and Paris.
"Fashion can communicate ideas and interests immediately and non-verbally," Yasuko says. "With Toga, I have explored the concept of the customer having agency over what they are wearing, a decision that conveys their personality instantly: they can choose to have bare skin underneath a hole in their skirt, or put trousers underneath. I would love for this H&M collection to introduce that idea to a global audience."
