Pisay students among top performers in Asian debate championship

Students of the Philippine Science High School (PSHS)-Main Campus have emerged as among the top performers at the Asian Schools Debating Championship (ASDC) held this month.

“The Philippine Science High School System congratulates the debaters from the PSHS-Main Campus who showed a commendable performance in the Asian Schools Debating Championship (ASDC) held on August 7-8 and 14-15,” the PSHS wrote on Facebook on Thursday, Aug. 26.

“We are proud of you!”

The preliminary and elimination rounds of the competition were held on Aug. 7-8 and Aug. 14-15, respectively.

The PSHS said the contingents are from Invictus: PSHS-MC’s Speech and Debate Club who scored the first international championship for the PSHS flagship program.

Declared as novice champions were Neil De Jesus (Batch 2022), Veronica Guinto (Batch 2022), and Gwen Valimento (Batch 2022). Valimento emerged as Novice Finals Best Speaker.

Jerd Carlos, Hanz Arnaldo, Neomi Mendoza, and Reign Peña, all Batch 2023, became novice quarterfinalists. Also joining them were Kyle Ramos (Batch 2022) and Matthew Serna (Batch 2024).

Included in the list of open quarterfinalists were David Mencias (Batch 2022), Ram Mayo (Batch 2022) and Hugh Mejos (Batch 2023). Mencias landed as the fifth Best Novice Speaker, while Mayo and Mejos got the 9th Best Novice Speaker titles.

Major Asian schools participated in the English debate competition, which is open to students aged 11 to 19 and currently enrolled in a primary or secondary school.

The competition is held online for students from all over Asia in an Asian Parliamentary format.
