Phivolcs suspends measurement of Taal's sulfur emission as personnel undergoes quarantine

The measurement of sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas emitted by Taal Volcano will be temporarily stopped starting Friday, Aug. 27, while the Taal Volcano Observatory (TVO) personnel are undergoing quarantine, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

"Dahil dito, ang mga kawani ng TVO ay hindi makapagsagawa ng survey at ng kinakailangang maintenance checks ng instrumentong Flyspec na panukat ng SO2 gas (As a result, TVO staff were unable to conduct the survey and the required maintenance checks of the Flyspec SO2 gas gauge instrument)," Phivolcs said in an advisory.

Phivolcs said it has already organized a replacement team to conduct the survey and is arranging the transfer of Flyspec from another Volcano Observatory in Bicol to continue the SO2 survey in Taal.

"Patuloy pa rin ang pagmamanman ng iba pang parametro ng bulkan at hindi matitigil ang 24/7 na panunungkulan ng TVO. Hindi po muna tatanggap ng sinumang bisita ang TVO sa mga susunod na araw bilang pag-iingat (The monitoring of other volcanic parameters is still ongoing and TVO’s 24/7 tenure will not be stopped. TVO will not receive any visitors in the next few days as a precaution)," it said.

Phivolcs asked for public understanding as it suspends the measurement of Taal's SO2 emission.

"Asahan po natin na ipagpapatuloy ang pagsusukat ng SO2 mula sa Taal sa pinakamaagang panahon na ligtas para sa ating mga kawani at sa lahat (We hope to continue measuring SO2 from Taal at the earliest possible time that is safe for our staff and everyone)," it added.
