More malls to host voter registration

There will be more opportunities for voters to register.

On Friday, August 27, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) launched the voter registration in SM malls at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

"We are happy to host once again the registration in malls similar to what we have done in 2012," Steven Tan, president SM Supermalls, said during the launch.

"We are one with the government in providing accessible sites for registration especially during this time when most areas are in stringent lockdown," he added.

"Our malls wil serve as safe centers for registration and help achieve the goal to register as many citizens as possible," said Tan.

Comelec Commissioner Aimee Ferolino said the time of registration in malls will depend on the local election officer.

"The time of registration will depend on the coordonation with the local election officer. Usually they will take into consideration the time of mall hours," she said.

The Comelec earlier also partnered with Robinsons Malls and Ayala Malls for the holding of satellite voter registration activities.

Meanwhile, it is very unlikely that there will be voter registration activities on Sundays.

"That (proposal) is highly unlikely (to be granted)," Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said.

"Right now, we are already doing six days. Let us give our people time to rest also," he added.

The Comelec already extended the voter registration hours starting August 23 in all Offices of Election Officers (OEOs) by operating from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., from Mondays to Fridays.

The poll body also approved the conduct of voter registration on Saturdays and holidays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
