Ernie Gawilan finishes ninth in men's 200m IM SM7 of Tokyo Paralympics

Ernie Gawilan missed his chance to make it to the finals of the men’s 200-meter individual medley SM7 Friday after finishing ninth in the heats at the Tokyo Paralympics.

Gawilan timed 2 minutes and 50.49sec to finish ninth out of 13 participants in the morning preliminaries where the top eight para swimmers will advance to the medal round.

He finished fifth in his heat.

Gawilan was also eight seconds slower than last qualifier Pipo Carlomagno of Argentina, who clocked 2:42.43.

Israel’s Mark Malyar topped the preliminaries with 2:32.86, followed by Argentina’s Inaki Basiloff (2:33.23), Ukraine’s Andrii Trusov (2:34.35), United States’ Evan Austin (2:35.40), Colombia’s CD Serrano Zarate (2:36.11), Russian Olympic Committee’s Christian Sadie (2:36.75) and United States’ Rudy Garcia-Tolson (2:39.78).

Gawilan is still scheduled to compete in the men’s 400m freestyle S7 on Sunday and men’s 100m backstroke S7 on Monday.
