Asian Senior Women's Volleyball Championship rescheduled next year

The 21^st Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship that the country is hosting has been moved to May 2022 due to the rising COVID-19 cases.

The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) made the announcement Friday, reiterating that they are heeding the Asian Volleyball Confederation’s suggestion for the health and safety of participating athletes.

The continental tournament, a qualifier for the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship, was originally scheduled for Aug. 29 to Sept. 5 in Pampanga but was shelved due to the spike of COVID-19 cases across the globe.

The PNVF eyed an October schedule, but this would run contrary to the International Volleyball Federation world calendar.

In a letter to PNVF President Tats Suzara, AVC President Rita Subowo suggested a competition date of May 15 to 22, 2022 upon the ABC Board of Administration’s request to the international volleyball federation (FIVB) to organize the Asian championship in May “in order for the women's teams to obtain FIVB World Ranking points from the 2021 continental tournament like other confederations.”

"It will be good for the organizer to have the leading teams of Asia to participate in this championship," Subowo said.

The FIVB proposed to use continental ranking to select the two qualified teams for the World Championship with China and Japan earning the slots as the top two in Asia. The remaining qualified teams will be selected based on their world ranking.
