Romualdez's VP bid unlikely, says Roque, as Duterte's vow to support him is raised

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said President Duterte will honor his promise to support House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez in case the solon runs for vice president next year.

However, the Palace official is convinced that Romualdez won't be vying for that post in May 2022.

"I was there when the President said that , I forget the occasion, it was a signing of bills into law. And I believe the President says that he is a man of his word," Roque said in a press briefing Thursday, Aug. 26, when he was reminded of the Chief Executive's promise.

It was brought up by a reporter after Roque revealed minutes earlier that Duterte was set on running for the vice presidency in the upcoming polls under ruling party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).

Acknowledging the conundrum, Roque said: "Eh kung tatakbo po si Congressman Romualdez, susuportahan pa rin niya. Pero wala naman pong indication na tatakbo si Congressman Romualdez as vice president (If Congressman Romualdez will run he will still support him. But there is no indication that Congressman Romualdez will run as vice president)."

Asked about the possibility of Duterte backing out from his vice presidential bid as a result of his commitment to support Romualdez should he run, Roque again stated that the latter scenario wasn't likely. He also insinuated that the majority leader might run for a different position.

"So dahil binitawan niyang salita na kung tatakbo si Congressman Romualdez susuportahan niya (And because Duterte promised to support Congressman Romualdez if he runs), I believe if Congressman Romualdez will run, he will not run for vice president," he said.

Romualdez is the president of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) party.
