Metro Manila had the most number of new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases reported on Wednesday, Aug 25, the OCTA Research said Thursday, Aug. 26.

The independent research group identified 20 areas in the country with the highest number of new infections recorded on Wednesday.

Leading the list is the National Capital Region (NCR) with 3,627 cases, followed by Cavite with 1,281 cases, according to OCTA fellow Prof. Guido David.

The following areas also had the most number of new cases reported on Wednesday:

Laguna - 779 cases

Cebu - 733 cases

Pampanga - 626 cases

Bulacan - 525 cases

Bukidnon - 425 cases

Davao del Sur - 414 cases

Iloilo - 390 cases

Rizal - 365 cases

Cagayan - 330 cases

Batangas - 328 cases

Pangasinan - 320 cases

Nueva Ecija - 249 cases

Misamis Oriental - 240 cases

South Cotabato - 205 cases

Quezon - 160 cases

Zamboanga del Sur - 160 cases

Ilocos Norte - 152 cases

Cotabato - 141 cases

On Wednesday, the Philippines logged 13,573 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases, raising the total number of active cases to 125,378.

OCTA said Metro Manila’s reproduction number, which refers to the average number of secondary infections by each infected individual, has gone down to 1.53 from 1.78.

However, the current reproduction number is still within the critical range.

ICUs in some Central Luzon areas at critical level

Meanwhile, OCTA reported that intensive care unit (ICU) utilization rates in Bulacan (90 percent), Pampanga (91 percent), Nueva Ecija (88 percent), and Tarlac (94 percent) were at “critical” levels.

In its latest monitoring report, OCTA tagged Santa Maria, San Jose Del Monte, San Fernando, Olongapo, Cabanatuan, Tarlac City, and Balanga as “areas of concern” for COVID-19.

The independent research group reported that many areas in Bulacan continued to have an increase in new cases. These include areas such as Santa Maria, San Jose Del Monte, Meycauayan, and Bocaue.

In Pampanga, on the other hand, the trends have “slowed down” as the one-week growth rates decreased to less than 20 percent.

But the experts noted that ICU occupancy in San Fernando (99 percent) and Mabalacat (86 percent) remained at critical level.

“Olongapo also continued to have an increase in new COVID-19 cases, and its ICU and hospital bed occupancy were at critical level,” OCTA said in its report issued Thursday.

Moreover, the group flagged the “sharp” rise in new cases in Cabanatuan, where ICU beds occupancy was at critical level.

“In Tarlac City, hospital bed and ICU occupancy were at or near critical level,” OCTA said.
