New core facility at PH Genome Center to be inaugurated in September -- DOST chief

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) announced Thursday, Aug. 26, that a new core facility at the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) is expected to be inaugurated next month.

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said the public can expect the inauguration of the PGC Protein, Proteomics and Metabolomic Facility (PPMF) in September

“The PGC provides high quality and ultramodern sequencing and analytical services to the Philippine scientific community. By next month, September, we will be inaugurating the DOST-funded PGC Protein, Protemics and Metabolomics Facility— which is expected to expand the world-class services and capabilities of the Center,” he announced during the Talakayang HeaRT (Health Research and Technology) Beat press conference on OMIC Technologies for Health (OMICS) Program on Thursday.

The facility is funded by the DOST-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development, led by Executive Director Director Jaime C. Montoya.

In its Facebook post, the PGC said it is committed to continue expanding its capabilities for OMICS analysis with the establishment of the PPMF.

“The facility will host research projects, and offer services entered on the assessment of total protein expression (proteomics) as well as total metabolite populations in test samples (metabolomics). These provide the capability to assess how genomic potentials are translated to functional traits,” it said.

The PPMF is also expected “to facilitate the education and training of Filipino researchers and scientists in the use of Multi-OMICS technologies.”

OMICS program is one of the priority research and development areas of DOST-PCHRD.
