22 crew rescued from cargo vessel damaged by fire in Albay

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has rescued 22 crew members from a cargo vessel after it was damaged by fire in the waters off Tabaco City, Albay on Monday, Aug. 23.

The PCG said cargo vessel MV Delwin Matthew, owned and operated by Pherwin Shipping Corporation had 22 crew members on board when the fire hit the vessel.

Based on the investigation, one of the crew members has noticed an unusual smoke coming from the ship’s galley at around 8:45 a.m. while passing off Barangay Salvacion, Tabaco City.

Authorities said the faulty electric wiring was the probable cause of the fire.

The PCG said the crew members have tried to combat the fire using the fire extinguisher, however, it easily reached the pilothouse.

After receiving the information, personnel of the PCG immediately rendered assistance with the help of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).

The two-hour fire was extinguished at around 11 a.m. No crew members were injured during the incident.
