Phivolcs: Magnitude 5.0 quake hits Zamboanga Sibugay

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a 5.0-magnitude earthquake in Zamboanga Sibugay on Wednesday evening, Aug. 25.

Phivolcs said the epicenter of the earthquake was traced at 9 kilometers (km) southeast of Olutanga, Zamboanga Sibugay at around 8:03 p.m. It was initially measured at magnitude 5.2 but later revised it to 5.0.

The earthquake was strongly felt at Intensity V in Mabuhay, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Meanwhile, it was "moderately strong" at Intensity IV in Zamboanga City; Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur; Isabela City, Basilan; and Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

It was "weak" at Intensity III in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur; and Liloy, Zamboanga del Norte, while it was slightly felt at Intensity II in Dipolog City, Polanco and Manukan, Zamboanga del Norte; and Molave, Zamboanga del Sur.

Phivolcs' instruments also measured the earthquake at Intensity III in Zamboanga City.

It said the earthquake was tectonic in origin, which means the tremor was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

Phivolcs said aftershocks are likely to occur.
