Neil Etheridge makes debut in Birmingham's loss to Fulham

Neil Etheridge made his season debut for Birmingham City in a losing effort Tuesday, Aug. 24 (early Wednesday Philippine time) against his former club Fulham in the Carabao Cup.

The Philippine international started at goalkeeper but the Blues suffered a 2-0 home defeat before 4,800 fans at St. Andrew’s Stadium to cut short their stint in annual cup competition for all clubs in the English Premier League and the four divisions of the English Football League.

Jay Standsfield scored the opener for the visitors in the 26th before Antonee Robinson produced the second goal two minutes into the second half added time to help Fulham secure a spot in the third round.

Etheridge previously missed the first five matches of Birmingham in all competitions, including the EFL Championship, after being hospitalized due to COVID-19.

Matija Sarkic, signed on loan from Premier League side Wolves, started four of the five matches in Etheridge’s absence.

Birmingham City currently sits in eighth spot in the Championship with seven points in four matches, three behind leader Fulham.
