Kontra Daya says Duterte VP bid 'a mockery of the law'

For Kontra Daya, President Duterte running for vice president in the May 2022 polls is not only unethical but also makes a mockery of the law.

"While there is an argument that it is technically legal, this is still patently unethical," Kontra Daya Convenor Danilo Arao said in an interview.

"Duterte running for VP makes a mockery of the law, similar to how the party-list system is being hijacked by the rich and powerful," he added.

Arao said the possibility of Duterte getting a second term as president becomes real once his running mate steps down.

"This defeats the purpose of the Constitution that prohibits such a situation," he said.

Duterte announced on Tuesday that he will run for vice president in the 2022 elections.

The poll watchdog group, meantime, said that they are also concerned with the credibility of the elections as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) would be filled with Duterte appointees.

"Our major concern is the credibility of the 2022 polls, the results of which is crucial not just to the pandemic response but also to the national development," said Arao.

The Comelec will be left with Duterte appointees Commissioners Socorro Inting, Marlon Casquejo, and Aimee Ferolino after Chairman Sheriff Abas, Commissioners Rowena Guanzon and Antonio Kho retire in February next year.
