DOST signs MOA with charcoal trading enterprise for SETUP aid

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has committed to provide equipment and technology to RGC Charcoal Trading to boost its briquetting production under the agency’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP).

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said DOST-Caraga, through Provincial Science and technology Center (PSTC)-Surigao del Norte, signed on Aug. 13 a memorandum of agreement with RGC Charcoal Trading on Aug. for the implementation of the project entitled “Capability Upgrading of RGC Charcoal Briquetting Production.”

"The project aims to upgrade its briquetting equipment, to increase production volume, and to provide quality briquette products through S&T. Specifically, it aims to boost the efficiency of the enterprise through technology and equipment upgrading,” he said.

Established in 2018, RGC Charcoal Trading is engaged in charcoal trading.

De la Peña said the firm has now ventured into producing charcoal briquettes from the wastes or charcoal fines produced during collection and transportation of coconut shell charcoal.

“As the demand for charcoal briquettes grew, the company decided to upgrade their existing equipment to improve the quality of their briquette products and expand the production to serve a larger market and promote cleaner fuel use which would reduce reliance on forests for charcoal/wood fuel,” he said. “DOST is assisting the company through the SETUP.”

The SETUP program seeks to improve the productivity and competitiveness of local entrepreneurs through the adoption of technology-based interventions.”

The program enables MSMEs to address their technical problems and improve productivity and efficiency through:

-Infusion of appropriate technologies to improve products, services and/or operations

-Human resource training, technical assistance and consultancy services

-Design of functional packages and labels

-Assistance in the establishment of product standards including testing

-Database management system

-Provision of assistance for technology acquisition

-Priority Sectors.

The priority sectors of the program are Food processing, Furniture, Gifts, Housewares, Decors, Agriculture/Marine/Aquaculture, Metals and engineering, and Others (including information and communications technology (ICT), pharmaceuticals and health products).
