Bong Go 'most qualified' to be next president, Nograles asserts

Senator Bong Go is the "most qualfied" person to become the next president, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said on Wednesday, Aug. 25.

In an interview over CNN's The Source, Nograles attested to how much the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) believes in the capabilites of Go as a potential leader.

"We believe Senator Bong Go is most qualified to lead the country as our next president. We believe in his abilities and capabilities. We believe he will be the best tandem for President Duterte when President Duterte is elected as vice president," he said.

On Tuesday, President Duterte confirmed that he would accept the party menbers' prior nomination of him as their vice presidential bet in the upcoming 2022 elections.

Duterte sits as PDP-Laban chairman. He and Go are longtime friends, dating back to the farmer's days as Davao City mayor.

"Siya po yung pinakamagandang ka-tandem din ni Pangulo Duterte sa pagseserbisyo sa bansa (He is the best partner for President Duterte in serving the nation)," Nograles said of Go, adding that the country's next president and vice president must be able to "work hand in hand and help each other".

The Cabinet Secretary recalled that, alongside PDP-Laban's nomination of Duterte as vice presidential candidate, it has also endorsed Go as its bet in the Palace race.

However, Go has repeatedly said that he wasn't interested in being the standard-bearer and that he would rather focus on responding to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic right now.

Nograles acknowledged this and said that the party was willing to give the senator more time. After all, PDP-Laban will be holding its national convention on Sept. 8.

“Between now until September 8, we are giving time for Senator Bong Go to give any statement that he wants, if he wishes, hopefully he will accept our endorsement the same way that President Duterte accepted our endorsement.

"But come what may pagdating sa (on) Sept. 8, sa (in the) national convention, eh kailangan namin mag-nominate ng aming (we need to nominate our) presidential contender at (and) so far as it stands pagdating ng Sept. 8 ang aming inominate is Senator Bong Go (when Sept. 8 comes we will nominate Bong Go)," he said.
