Tale of two strengths as Jenelyn Olsim and Bi Nguyen cross paths
It will be a clash between power and speed when Jenelyn Olsim takes on Bi “Killer Bee” Nguyen this Friday, August 27.
The pair of dazzling strikers will go head on in a crucial atomweight bout set for the previously recorded ONE: BATTLEGROUND III, which airs this Friday, 27 August, from the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Though her newfound confidence on the ground was highlighted in her debut, Olsim remains a dangerous striker through and through and that’s something that isn’t lost on Nguyen.
In fact, she believes that Olsim’s power will still be her biggest weapon in this clash.
“Going into this fight, I want to rephrase that I am the MMA fighter in this fight. I think her weakness is that she doesn’t have as much MMA experience as me. She’s such a strong striker that a lot of her fights haven’t gone to the ground at all. She has a really strong right hand,” Nguyen shared on ONEFC.com.
“She’s also massive for this weight class. She’s coming down from strawweight. She’s big. She has heavy hands and heavy kicks. I’m just faster and have more ways to win.”
At the same time, the Vietnamese-American star knows that power isn’t everything.
“The thing is, there are so many ways to hurt people, and power is just one part of striking. There’s speed. There’s elusiveness. I also have power,” Nguyen said.
“I’ll be faster than her. I’ll strike smarter than her. And if I clip her in the right place, she’ll go down, so it’ll be a fun exchange. It’ll definitely be strength versus speed.”
On the other hand, it’s something that Olsim took exception to, as she believes it’s an aspect of the bout that she can dominate.
She knows the danger that Nguyen presents, and she’s confident that whatever “Killer Bee” brings to the table in that clash, she can handle.
“I love Bi Nguyen’s fighting spirit and confidence. I really admire that. But I believe in our game plan. If she believes she can frustrate me on the feet, then let’s make it happen. Why not, right?” Olsim said.
“If she’s confident with her skills on the feet, then for sure I am confident too, and we can keep it there.”
But Olsim has other plans. While Nguyen expects her to come out swinging, the 24-year-old Filipina is looking to feed a new addiction in this game - her fondness for grappling.
“I want to finish this match on the ground, whether it be getting a submission or a TKO via ground and pound, because that feels good.”
