'Fear of accountability': 1Sambayan not suprised at Duterte's run for VP

Opposition coalition 1Sambayan said on Tuesday, August 24, that the announcement of President Duterte’s acceptance of the ruling PDP-Laban’s nomination for vice presidency in 2022 is not surprising, stressing that it’s a “complete mockery of our Constitution and democratic process.”

“Obviously, this is driven by fear of accountability both from the ICC (International Criminal Court) and from our own justice system,” the coalition said in a statement.

“The candidacy is both legally and morally wrong, and we trust that the Filipino people will realize his brazen, selfish and self-serving motives,” it added.

1Sambayan is led by retired Supreme Court associate justice Antonio Carpio, retired Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, and former Foreign Affairs chief Albert del Rosario, all of whom are staunch critics of the President.

The coalition, which is in talks with various candidates from the opposition in a bid to come up with a unified slate for the May 2022 polls, said that it is “no surprise” that the Chief Executive accepted his party’s nomination to run as vice president.

“Sadly, today’s declaration comes at the heels of numerous allegations of corruption and continuing EJK, even as we mourn the death of 30,000 Filipinos due to a failed COVID-19 response,” the group noted.

The coalition stressed that it is now “more determined” to unify the democratic forces in the country to respond to “the challenge to present an alternative candidate for the May 2022 election.”

In a statement released on Tuesday, PDP-Laban said that the President has accepted the nomination and is willing to “sacrifice” and “heed the clamor of the people.”

But Senator Koko Pimentel, whose father was the founder of the party from which he seemed to be ousted by a faction of the President’s allies, said that the presidential candidate should choose his/her running mate.

“Choosing the VP candidate first before naming your presidential candidate is an unusual circuitous convoluted process which I have never encountered before,” he added.
