PH logs 18,332 new COVID-19 cases,a new record high

The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday, August 23, recorded 18,332 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases, a new record high.

The number surpassed the August 20 record of 17,231.

The additional new cases brought the nationwide total to 1,857,646.

The Health department also reported 13,794 new recoveries and 151 new deaths.

Total recoveries rose to 1,695,335 while total deaths climbed to 31,961.

Less the deaths and recoveries, the DOH said, there remain 130,350 active COVID-19 cases in the country.

Of the active cases, 94.8 percent were mild cases, 2.5 percent were asymptomatic, 1.2 percent were severe, 0.9 percent were moderate, and 0.6 percent were critical cases.

The DOH said 321 duplicates were removed from the total case count as 316 of these were recoveries.

"Moreover, 68 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation," it said.

The Health department said all labs were operational on Aug. 21, while three labs were not able to submit their data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System (CDRS).

It added that based on data in the last 14 days, the three non-reporting labs contribute, on average, 0.2 percent of samples tested and 0.5 percent of positive individuals.
