PDP-Laban to push through with Go-Duterte tandem—Nograles

The Partido ng Demokratikong Pilipino-Laban (PDP-Laban) will push through with its plan to nominate for president and vice president, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go and President Rodrigo Duterte in the upcoming May 2022 national elections.

Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, PDP-Laban’s executive vice president, confirmed this in an interview over ANC’s Headstart on Monday, August 23.

“Nothing has changed, as far as the executive committee is concerned. We will nominate Bong Go as president and President Duterte as vice president. That’s a nomination that will have to run through the body,” Nograles said.

He further said that the party is not discussing any possible substitution. The party’s national convention on September 8 will also push through.

“The voters in that national convention will have to decide on that nomination,” the Cabinet official said.

Nograles, however, said it would now depend on Go and the President to decide whether to accept the nomination or not.

“Everything is fluid right now. Again it will depend on our nominees,” he pointed out.

A ranking member of the PDP-Laban party had earlier said that a Go-Duterte tandem is the “logical and popular” choice for the party.

“We hope it pushes through because we can’t see anyone else running in 2022 besides the Go and Duterte tandem,” Melvin Matibag, the party’s secretary general had said.

Nograles and Matibag both belong to the faction headed by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi. Last July, Cusi’s faction ousted the camp of Sen. Manny Pacquiao and Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III from the party leadership.

Pacquiao is reported to be gearing for a presidential bid in next year’s polls. This has triggered the boxing champion to be at odds against Duterte.
