PDEA mum on misencounter as DOJ finalizes probe result

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said on Monday, August 23, that it is withholding any comments regarding the misencounter between its men and the Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel during botched drug operation near a Quezon City mall on February 24.

The incident along Commonwealth Avenue left two policemen, a PDEA agent and an informant dead.

In May, PDEA and PNP men nearly engaged in another misencounter in Fairview, Quezon City.

In a Viber message PDEA spokesperson Derrick Arnold Carreon said “as emphasized by our Director-General we shall hold any comments until the official results are released by the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation).’’

The NBI in an ABS-CBN report said that the probe of the shootout between the PNP and PDEA is nearly complete.

It "hopes" to submit its final report to the Department of Justice by the end of the month, said Justice secretary Menardo Guevarra.

Guevarra noted that the NBI is waiting for the result of digital forensic examination of the mobile phones of operatives involved in the incident as “a lot of material evidence is expected to be mined from these devices.’’ (Chito A. Chavez)
