Para swimmer Gary Bejino first to see action in Tokyo Paralympics

Para swimmer Gary Bejino is expected to set the tone for the Philippine team when he becomes the first Filipino to see action in the Tokyo Paralympics set to officially start on Tuesday, Aug. 24.

Bejino, 25, will plunge into action in the morning heats of the men’s 200-meter individual medley SM6 on Thursday, Aug. 26, at the Tokyo Aquatics Center.

It is one of Bejino’s four events in the Paralympics as the PH team hopes to ride on the success of their national team counterparts in the Tokyo Olympics where they went home with one gold, two silver and one bronze medal.

Bejino earned a berth to the Paralympics via the approval of his bi-partite application from the international federation. He boasts of winning one silver and two bronze medals at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia.

Para powerlifter Achelle Guion is also scheduled on the same day to compete in the women’s -45kg at the Tokyo International Forum.

The PH team suffered a blow prior to the start of the Paralympics when members of the delegation including one of the six qualified athletes tested positive for COVID-19.

The Philippine Paralympic Committee has yet to give further details including the name of the athlete although it assured that they were all already in isolation for proper medical care.

According to Philippine Sports Commission’s National Training Director and Chief of Staff Marc Velasco, team physician and COVID liaison officer Dra. Janis de Vera has assured the health and safety of the remaining delegation members who arrived in Tokyo on Sunday.

“The PSC, as always, will continue to support our delegation to the Tokyo Paralympics. The PSC team included in the secretariat led by Commissioner Arnold Agustin remains intact and will continue to give support where we can,” Velasco said.

Meanwhile, wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan will carry the flag in the opening ceremony Tuesday.
