OCTA Research sees 60k active COVID cases in Metro Manila by mid-September

Independent research group OCTA on Monday, Aug. 23, said Metro Manila may hit 60,000 active coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases by the middle of September.

"We should be hitting a peak of about 60,000 active cases and it will happen around the middle of September. And even with a slower decrease, we would not be exceeding 70,000 cases," OCTA Research fellow Dr. Guido David said in a virtual forum.

He pointed out that Metro Manila also reached about 60,000 active cases during the COVID-19 surge in March.

Back then, David noted that Metro Manila saw an "overwhelmed" healthcare system.

"But if we reach 100,000 active cases that would be close to catastrophic because even in Delhi during the peak of the surge they reached 100,000 active cases.

He noted that Delhi has a population of 30 million, which is twice more than the population of Metro Manila.

"If we reach 260,000 active cases, it would really be catastrophic. That would be 2 percent of our population. If that were the case we would definitely see a mass grave. Again, this is my own interpretation of the data," he added.
