Comelec inks MOA with Ayala Malls for mall registration

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Monday, Aug. 23, signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Ayala Malls for mall registration.

During the online signing, Comelec Chairman Sheriff Abas described the signing as "timely" especially with the voter registration period deadline on Sept. 30 already nearing.

"Having this malls open to cater voter registration is a timely initiative considering that we are already in the last phase of the voter registration period for the upcoming elections," he said.

"We, at Comelec, are grateful that we are being allowed more venues so that our voter registration will be more accessible to the public," he added.

Although the poll body has already reached its target of having over 60 million registered voters for the May 2022 polls, the Comelec said, it will continue to urge the public to register.

"We don't have exact figures of possible applicants because we already reached our target," Comelec Commissioner Antonio Kho said.

"But we are doing all these mall registration just to invite additional applicants to register. We exert all efforts to continuously incite more to register," he added.

When asked if there are plans to have mall voting in the May 2022 polls, Abas said their partnership with malls is limited to mall registration.

"For now, our partnership with the malls are limited only to voter registration," he said.

"We have proposals before that we will be conducting the elections at the malls. But this was disapproved because of some legal issues," added Abas.
