The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday, August 23, said that majority of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in the country exhibit either mild or moderate symptoms or none at all.

“We’re seeing roughly about almost 98 percent mild moderate and asymptomatics for these COVID cases. We’d seen the numbers of about 1.86 percent for the severe and critical,” Health Undersecretary Leopoldo Vega said in an interview with ANC.
“This is kind of different from what we saw in April and last year when it was hovering about three percent for the severe and the critical,” he added.
Vega said that this was mainly the result of good management in handling the deadly virus as well as vaccination.
As of August 17, there are at least 1,245 intensive care unit (ICU) beds in Metro Manila, of which, about 73 percent are now occupied, he noted.
"At January, we saw the number at 780, but now we doubled it to about 1,400 plus intensive care units that we have increased here in Metro Manila," Vega said.
The health undersecretary also said that the healthcare utilization rate in Metro Manila is in moderate risk, however, the intensive care units is now in the high risk category at 73 percent.
Vega also noted that most emergency rooms are now clogged as hospitals classify the patients between COVID and non-COVID.
"If the numbers will still go up, then we will have to find out and align our hospital beds for these COVID patients," he said.
Vega, meanwhile, urged the public to get vaccinated as it is proven effective in preventing hospitalization and deaths of patients infected with the deadly disease.
