Saso falls to 27th

With three bogeys in the scorecard, Filipino-Japanese golfer Yuka Saso struggled almost all day in the third round as she shot a two-over par 74 in the AIG Women’s British Open Saturday (Sunday morning in Manila) at the Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland.

Saso failed to convert on birdie opportunities on several occasions. Her solitary birdie came on 14 after she bogeyed on 2, 10 and 12, the second straight day she made one extra stroke on the par 5 hole.

On that same hole, the 20-year-old Saso – the reigning US Women’s Open champion – made a terrific shot off the fringe from more than 30 feet for an eagle last Thursday.

Saso, the world No.8, now has a three-day aggregate score of 213, which is three-under for the $4.5 million tournament.

She is tied for 27th to 32nd places with second round leader Mina Harigae of the United States, Matilde Castren of Finland, Jenny Shun of South Korea, Nasa Hataoka of Japan and Stephanie Kyriacou of Australia.

They are six shots behind co-leaders Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist and Denmark’s Nanna Koerstz Madsen both at nine-under 207. Nordqvist shot a third round 65, while Madsen finished with a 68.

The two enjoy a one-shot lead on American Lizette Sales, who is at solo third with a 208 after a 70.

Amateur golfer Louise Duncan of Scotland, Sanna Nuutinen of Finland, Madelene Sagstrom of Sweden and American Lexi Thompson are tied for fourth to seventh spots at 209.

The group is ahead of Ariya and Moriya Jutanugarn of Thailand, Canadian Brooke Henderson, Yealimi Noh of the US, Sei Young Kim of Korea, Georgia Hall of England and world No. 1 Nelly Korda of the US at 210.
