After suffering defeat at the hands of Cuban boxer Yordenis Ugas, Pacquiao once again fueled talks about his declaration for the presidency when asked about the topic in a post-match interview in front of the T-Mobile Arena crowd in Las Vegas, Nevada Saturday Aug. 21 there (Sunday in Manila).
"Well, I will make a final announcement next month," said the 42-year-old Pacquiao, who will be taking a much-needed rest before also deciding if he will be hanging up the gloves for good or not.
"And I know that I'm facing big problems, more difficult work than boxing. But I want to help the people, I want to help them."
The 42-year-old Pacquiao has been involved in the country's presidential talks starting the pandemic year of 2020 when the likes of Top Rank chief Bob Arum, his long-time promoter before, and legendary trainer Freddie Roach mentioned the fighting senator in interviews.
Recently, Vice President Leni Robredo said that she will be having a sit-down discussion with Pacquiao after the Ugas bout to talk about their political views, standpoint in the 2022 elections, among others.
Robredo, for her part, clarified that he won't be teaming up with Pacquiao just yet as she also had a conversation with possible candidates Senators Richard Gordon and Panfilo Lacson.
As far as politics is concerned, Pacquiao had a fallout with Partido Demokratiko ng Pilipinas-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) the past few months as he was replaced by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi as its new president in July.
Likewise, it would be recalled that Duterte criticized Pacquiao for making comments about the corruption claims happening under the current administration.
"We entertain people in the ring but what's important is what we've done to others, how we can help them. Not only for Filipinos but to all our brothers and sisters all over the world," said Pacquiao, clad in formal wear with his sunglasses on, during the official post-fight press conference.
"Always remember this: God is love and therefore we must love each other and help each other. Not only by words but by action," he added, expressing gratitude to all the promoters, media, the fans, and the sport itself who made him a living legend in boxing history.
