DOST signs MOA with Terra Verde Ecofarm on bamboo extraction for textile application

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) has signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Terra Verde Ecofarm Inc. (TVEI) to forge a partnership on the production of bamboo textiles through the agency’s bamboo fiber extraction technology.

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said the partnership seeks to explore the Institute’s bamboo fiber extraction technology, which will benefit the community farmers in Maragondon, Cavite where the integrated ecofarm is located.

“The processing of bamboo fibers will be used for the production of bamboo textiles,” he said during his weekly report on Friday, Aug. 20.

The project is funded under DOST-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources (PCAARRD)-Grants-In-Aid (GIA) program, entitled “Field Verification of Bamboo Textile Material Production and Treatment Technology”.

With the signing of the MOA, “a bamboo fiber extraction facility will be established in the premises of TVEI for the extraction of fiber from Kawayang Tinik (Bambusa blumeana) poles,” de la Peña said.

The MOA was signed on Aug. 12.

The DOST chief noted that Terra Verde Ecofarm, Inc. focuses on natural farming technology, Integrated Diversified Organic Farming System (IDOFS), and integrated agri-tourism duly accredited by the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Bamboo production Training Center.
