PAGASA: 'Isang' likely to intensify into severe tropical storm but too far to affect PH

Tropical storm "Isang" (international name "Omais") has maintained its strength on Saturday evening, Aug. 21, but will likely intensify into a severe tropical storm in the next few hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its 11 p.m. bulletin.
Although it is seen to further intensify, PAGASA said Isang is still not expected to directly affect the country until it leaves the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Sunday morning or afternoon.
As of 10 p.m., Saturday, the center of tropical storm Isang was estimated at 575 kilometers (km) east-northeast of Itbayat, Batanes.
It has maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 105 kph.
"The tropical storm is forecast to move generally northwestward or north-northwestward tonight (Aug. 21) through tomorrow (Aug. 22) towards the East China Sea and may pass near or over Miyako Islands in the southern Ryukyu Islands tomorrow morning," PAGASA said.
"Outside the PAR region, Isang is forecast to move northward tomorrow evening through Monday morning (Aug. 23) over the East China Sea before turning north-northeastward towards the Korean Peninsula. The storm may pass near or over Jeju Island on Monday afternoon before making landfall in the vicinity of South Jeolla Province, South Korea on Monday evening," it added.
PAGASA said the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), a rain-inducing weather system that has circulations or low pressure systems, will be the prevailing system that may bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over several parts of the Philippines on Sunday.
The ITCZ will likely affect Metro Manila, Bulacan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bataan, Zambales, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Aklan, Antique, Iloilo, Guimaras, Negros Occidental, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Cotabato, Sarangani, South Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat.
Meanwhile, PAGASA said the rest of the country will continue to experience fair weather conditions with partly cloudy to cloudy skies and isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
PAGASA warned the public against flash floods or landslides that may occur during severe thunderstorms, which are often associated with bursts of heavy rainfall, lightning, thunder, gusty winds, and sometimes hail.
