Comelec says 41 days to go before last day of voter registration; extends voter registration hours starting Aug 23

There are only 41 days to go before the last day of the voter registration.

On Thursday, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced the extension of voter registration hours which will start on Aug. 23.

"Starting August 23, 2021, the new voter registration schedule will be Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m." read the advisory.

"Saturdays and holidays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m," it further read.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said so far there are already more than 60 million registered voters.

"Early on in the process we projected that we would have 59 million registered voters for 2022. At this moment, we already have well beyond 60 million registered voters," he said in an online press briefing Wednesday.

"At the start of this process we also said dat we expected to have four million new registrants. As of dis moment we are also pass that point. We are 4.3 million about two weeks ago," added Jimenez.

Although they already met their expectations, he said, they will continue to encourage the public to register.

"We've met the expectations that we've set for this registration period and we will continue working until the end of this registration period to accommodate who might still be trying to get registered for the May 2022 elections," said Jimenez.

The Comelec earlier suspended voter registration in areas under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) and modified ECQ (MECQ).

The voter registration period will end on Sept. 30.
