BTS' world concert tour cancelled

K-pop superstars BTS’ world concert tour has ultimately been cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

In an announcement on Aug. 20, Big Hit Music said “BTS Map of the Soul Tour,” which was put on hold since last year, is now cancelled.

“Our company has worked hard to resume preparations for the ‘BTS MAP OF THE SOUL TOUR,’ knowing that all fans have been waiting eagerly and long for the tour,” it said.

It added, “However, due to changing circumstances beyond our control, it has become difficult to resume performances at the same scale and timeline as previously planned. Therefore we must announce the cancellation of the ‘BTS MAP OF THE SOUL TOUR.’”

“The tour’s concerts in Seoul were previously canceled in February of last year, followed by the postponement of the North American leg in March; dates in Europe and Japan were postponed prior to the start of ticket sales in those regions,” according to Big Hit Music.

The agency said, “We regret that we must now inform you of the formal cancellation of the tour. For fans who have reserved tickets for the North American shows, you will receive an email from your original point of purchase regarding refunds.”

“Once again, please allow us to offer our sincere apology to all fans who have waited for the ‘BTS MAP OF THE SOUL TOUR’ to resume. We are working to prepare a viable schedule and performance format that can meet your expectations, and we will provide updated notices as soon as possible,” the agency said.

The ongoing COVID-19 restrictions including ban on mass gatherings and travel bans in different countries have made it impossible for concerts to be held.

K-pop artists like BTS have resorted to online concerts and fan meetings to be able to reach out and connect with fans.

In South Korea, for example, the government has imposed the highest level of social distancing in Seoul, Gyeonggi province and incheon

Restaurants and cafes in the three areas must close by 9 p.m. and only takeout and delivery are allowed after that time, according to Yonhap News. Private gatherings of at least three people are prohibited after 6 p.m.
