Scarlett Johansson’s ‘Black Widow,’ ‘The Medium’ lead top films in Korea in July

Scarlett Johansson’s “Black Widow” and the Thai-Korean horror film “The Medium” led the top-grossing films in South Korea for the month of July.

According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), theaters in Korea sold 6,976,291 tickets in July, the highest monthly total in 2021 to date, and higher by 41.56 percent compared to 4,927,993 tickets sold in June. In July 2020, 5,618,701 tickets were sold in Korean cinemas.

“Black Widow,” which opened in South Korea on July 7, sold 2.75 million tickets in July to place No. 1 among the top-grossing films. It earned $24.22 million for the month in South Korea.

Johansson, who was paid $20 million for “Black Widow,” has filed a lawsuit against Disney for releasing the movie simultaneously on the over-the-top video streaming platform Disney Plus and in theaters.

Placing second in Korea for July is the Thai-Korean horror movie “The Medium,” released on July 14, which recorded 810,712 in total admissions and revenue of $7.3 million in July. The movie stars Narilya Gulmongkolpech, Sawanee Utoomma, Sirani Yankittikan and Yasaka Chaisorn.

The animated movie “Boss Baby: Family Business” grabbed third place with 589,260 tickets sold and gross of $4.58 million in July.

The Kim Yoon-seok-Jo In-sung starrer “Escape from Mogadishu,” which only opened last July 28, placed fourth with 546,421 in total admissions and revenue of $4.4 million.

“Hard Hit,” a Korean thriller-action film starring Jo Woo-jin and Lee Jae-in, placed fifth with 483,265 tickets sold and revenue of $4.11 million.
