Diaz, Petecio warn public against fake social media accounts

Hidilyn Diaz and Nesthy Petecio warned netizens Sunday, Aug. 1 from following fake social media accounts that are using their names in light of their historic feats in the Tokyo Olympics.

The country’s first Olympic gold medalist took to her only Twitter page @diaz_hidilyn to tell followers that she does not own a new account from the same social networking service that came out recently.

“Di po ito account ko,” the weightlifter said, retweeting a post by broadcaster Boyet Sison who warned Diaz that an account @HidilynFDiaz is trying to impersonate her.

Petecio, who had just joined Twitter during her run to the boxing finals of the women’s featherweight with the account @nesthypetecio11, decried several Facebook and Instagram accounts that surfaced online.

Fake accounts are nothing new in the social media world, especially among popular figures like athletes.

One example is PBA star Calvin Abueva, who cautioned the public against a fake social media account claiming that some items being sold will go to charity.

Diaz has a Facebook page (facebook.com/hidilynweightlifter) and an Instagram account (hidilyndiaz) that are both verified.

Aside from her new Twitter page, Petecio also has a Tiktok account (nesh114).
