Comelec looking for ways to reactivate over 6 million deactivated voters

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is exploring ways to reactivate over six million deactivated voters.

On Twitter, Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said the En Banc will study if they can use online to revalidate or restore all names of those who failed to vote twice in consecutive elections.

She said they are also looking at the possibility of using their iRehistro platform for individual revalidation of deactivated voters.

"If we automatically reactivate 6.3 million (voters), that would be a record," said Guanzon.

On July 10, the poll official said only 600,000 of the 7.3 million voters deactivated for failure to vote twice have registered again.

Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez, however, believes that not all of the deactivated voters will apply for reactivation for the May 2022 polls.

"Our expectations is that we will not get all 7 million back," he said in a press briefing on July 12.

"The reason for that is because some of them moved to a different place, some moved overseas, some are no longer interested in voting," Jimenez added.

Still, he said, they will continue to encourage as many of them to seek reactivation.
