Active COVID-19 cases in San Juan City double after a month

The San Juan City local government said on Monday, August 2, that active COVID-19 cases in the city have doubled after only a month amid the increasing threat of the more contagious COVID-19 Delta variant.

"Unti-unti na nating nararamdaman ang epekto nitong surge (We are slowly feeling the effect of the surge)," San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora said in an interview with DZMM.

"Lumagpas na tayo sa 100 because for around two months prior to this week, nanatili tayo sa mga 60, 70, 80 cases lamang (We have reached 100 because for around 2 months prior to this week, we only had about 60, 70, 80 cases)," he added.

The city government recorded 181 active COVID-19 cases, 9,247 recoveries, and 229 deaths as of July 31, more than double the 88 active cases last July 1.

"We have moderate (cases) pero (but) so far, wala tayong severe. Marami diyan ay nandito sa ating quarantine facility (We don't have severe cases. Many are in the quarantine facility)," Zamora said.

He said that San Juan is only 16,000 away from its target of 92,000 fully vaccinated individuals and hopes that the city will achieve herd immunity by the end of August. The mayor added that the LGU has already given 131,000 first doses to its constituents.

The LGU had previously announced that two Delta variant cases have been detected in the city, including a 9 year-old boy. Both patients have been tagged as recovered after completing their quarantine.
