Composting can be time, labor, and space-consuming. It involves materials and processes that vary depending on the compost type. But did you know that you can reuse some food scraps for your plants without having to go through the whole composting process?

Here are three examples:

Banana peels

Feed your plants with potassium by directly burying banana peels into the soil. This aids in establishing healthy roots, repelling pests, and can also promote fruiting. Make sure to properly cover the peels with soil to avoid odor and insect attacks. Banana peels release potassium and other nutrients into the soil as they decompose, so it also benefits neighboring plants.

Eggshells

You can also use eggshells because these are good sources of calcium. Thoroughly wash, dry, and then pulverize them using a grinder. Get a handful of crushed eggshells and scatter them atop the soil. 

Coffee grounds

Nitrogen is a vital element that helps in the development of the plants’ leaves. With that, you can add just enough coffee grounds to your plants, but be careful not to apply too much of this since higher caffeine and acidity may also impede plant growth. You should not add more than half an inch layer of coffee grounds. Cover them with one to two inches of soil to prevent soil compaction.

Keep these scraps next time so you can feed the plants with their much-needed nitrogen, potassium, and calcium in a faster way.
