'It's a natural reaction': Duque defends confusion remark during Senate hearing

Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque defended himself after he expressed confusion during the Senate hearing last Wednesday, Aug. 18, on his agency’s handling of COVID-19 funds.
On Wednesday’s Senate hearing, Duque was heard saying “nagulo na yung utak ko, ‘di ko na alam kung... (I'm confused, I don't know if...).”
The Health chief said that his statement was a “natural reaction.”
“Naguluhan lang ako kasi yung figures ang dami-dami... Kaya nasabi ko on the side na naguguluhan yung utak ko dito sa mga figures (I got confused because of the several figures...That is why I expressed on the side that “I'm confused with these figures”),” Duque said in a television interview on Thursday, Aug. 19
“It's a natural reaction because of the enormity of the data being presented to me,” he added.
The DOH once again is in the hot seat after the Commission on Audit (COA) found “deficiencies” in the management of the P67.3 billion funds allocated for the country's COVID-19 pandemic response.
Duque assured that the DOH will resolve this issue.
“Tandaan natin naglabas ng clarificatory statement ang COA na wala naman audit finding na nagpapakita na may nawalang pondo sa katiwalian at korapsyon (Let us remember that the COA issued a clarificatory statement that there was no audit finding that shows that funds were lost due to corruption),” he said.
“Hinihingi lang nila ang mga dokumento na ibibigay naman ng (They are just asking for the documents which will be provided by the) DOH and its implementing operations unit. In fact, (we have been) given 60 days to do all of these,” he added.
