DOST licenses abaca fiber stripping technology to local machine shop in Zamboanga Sibugay

A local machine shop in Zamboanga Sibugay is now a licensee of the Department of Science and Technology-Metals Industry Research and Development Center’s (DOST-MIRDC) abaca fiber stripping technology.

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said a non-exclusive limited manufacturing agreement has already been signed between the DOST-MIRDC and Bongbong Mechanical Shop “for piloting the fabrication of an improved portable manual abaca fiber stripping machine.”

He said the agreement was signed last July 28.

“This initiative aims to provide a viable technology that can be conveniently used by abaca farmers and can be easily transported to mountainous abaca plantations,” de la Peña said.

He said prior to the signing of the agreement, an online meeting was held with DOST-MIRDC explaining salient features of the project.

It was attended by Simeon P. Lagura, proprietor of the Bongbong Mechanical Shop and staff from the Provincial Science and Technology Center – Zamboanga Sibugay (PSTC-ZSP).

Lagura said with the signing of the agreement, he expressed hope that there will be a profitable outcome on its market testing and promotion so that they may finally apply for a full commercial license of the technology.
