Chinese envoy announces Beijing's donation of 1 million Sinopharm vaccine doses to PH

Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian on Thursday said an additional Chinese donation of one million doses of Sinopharm vaccine will arrive in Manila on August 20 to 21, 2021.

Huang said the latest Chinese donation is part of China's pledge to substantively increase the supply of vaccines to the Philippines.

The Chinese diplomat noted that the recent uptick in the number of COVID-19 cases due to the entry of the Delta and other forms of variants has motivated the Philippine government to further procure more vaccine doses.

“And with the arrival of the donated Sinopharm vaccines and the substantive increase of Sinovac vaccines supply this month, our cooperation addresses the need to increase and fast-track vaccine supply and shipment,” he said.

He recalled that China was the first country to provide COVID-19 vaccines to the Philippines and has prioritized its export to the country.

To date, Chinese vaccines comprise more than 50 percent of the Philippines' supply of the jabs, mostly Sinovac's Coronavac vaccine totaling about 25.5 million doses.

“I am thankful for all those Filipino and Chinese colleagues who have been working tirelessly on our vaccine cooperation,” Huang said in his social media post.
