The Department of Health (DOH) said that cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) nationwide went up by 45 percent in the previous week.
“Tayo ay nakakakita ng pagtaas kada linggo. Ang peak na nakita natin nitong pangalawang linggo ng Agosto ay maikukumpara na sa peak na nakita natin noong April 2021 (We are seeing an increase every week. The peak we saw during the second week of August can be compared to the peak we saw in April 2021),” said DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire during the Malacanang press briefing on Tuesday, Aug. 17.
Vergeire said that the increase in COVID-19 cases is evident in the National Capital Region, Central Luzon, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon), Western Visayas, and Central Visayas.
“Ang mga kaso noong August 10 to 16 meron na tayong 12,834 cases per day at tumaas ng 3,894 or 45 percent cases per day, kumpara from the previous week of August 3 to 9 na meron lang tayong 8,930 cases (On August 10 to 16, we have 12,824 cases per day--- an increased of 3,894 or 45 percent cases per day, compared to the previous week of August 3 to 9 where we only had 8,930 cases),” she said.
Vergeire also maintained that an increase in COVID-19 cases is being experienced across all age groups.
“Comparing average cases per day in June to August---case increase was observed in all age groups. Increase among zero to nine years olds at 74 percent and 10 to 19 years old at 60 percent,” said Vergeire.
“There was no major change in the percent contribution of each age group to total cases. Largest proportion of cases still belong to 20 to 59 years old,” said Vergeire.
